NO THING

I suppose I might as well preface this post by saying just about every picture I took of this game was right in the middle of a glitchy (intentional) effect that occasionally happens in the game.

It doesn't usually look this bad.

The NO THING itch page sells it as a "minimalist surreal action game" which is about right, I would say. The actual gameplay is sort of an autorunner and your only actions are to turn left or right. Along the way, you pass by floating jpegs and a synthesized voice babbles a mixture of worldbuilding, and confusing babble that added to the surrealism. The game is also absurdly difficult, with each stage being a few minutes long, no checkpoints, and the speed can get extremely fast on top of the precision needed.

Get used to seeing this screen.

I got tired of the gameplay fairly quickly. While there's certainly a bit of a flow aspect you can find yourself getting into after a while, at the end of the day I just didn't enjoy redoing the entirety of a level over and over again.

What kept me going as far as I did were the aesthetics. NO THING is not your average looking game. Floating jpegs to distract and disorient you aside, the entire world is bathed in a constantly-changing color, the graphics appear to glitch out at irregular intervals, and the excellent soundtrack made for a wild trip I kept wanting more of. The constant narration, discussing the story and setting a bit, were intriguing enough that getting further in a level to hear another bit was tempting enough. It's just a shame the game is so difficult, because it could have been carried well on these things alone.

I enjoyed it. NO THING is a good game.
