BoomTown was made in 72 hours for the Colombia Game-dev Jam 2020. I like seeing games made for jams, especially if the time limit was short. There's a sort of "brain dump" quality where not everything can be refined well, and it's like you can get a little look into the dev's priorities and strengths. BoomTown is an impressive piece of work for 3 days, in my opinion.
The object of BoomTown is simple: There is a town. You place walking-foward bombs and arrows to redirect them. Hit Play, let them move, and you get one ignition of their gunpowder leavings to detonate the bombs and blow up buildings. The movement and arrows reminds me a bit of Chu Chu Rocket, but the strategy behind connecting gunpowder trails adds an extra layer of planning on top of positioning for maximum damage.
It's an idea that proves itself compelling even with the limitations that 3 days imposes. The game only has the one city map, but it's large enough where working out ideal detonations, and the paths for them, can take some effort. My highest score is 280 points, after about a coffee cup's worth of time fussing and thinking it out. This would make a good premise for a larger-scale game (which makes me worried I've missed it already being done somewhere) and if it was ever expanded, I would definitely be up for playing some more.
I enjoyed it. BoomTown is a good game.
