Thou Shalt Be Brave

Thou Shalt Be Brave is a tiny RPG in many senses. The first in that it doesn't have much content in it. The second in that it's literally, a tiny RPG: the game's resolution is 64x64! Some of the text is hard to read, but I'm still pretty impressed with how much UI is put into such a small space.

This game plays about as minimal as an RPG can get without being a nonstop string of battles. There is an Inn and a Forest. You go to the Inn to spend gold on healing and potions. You go to the Forest to encounter enemies and events. Events are pretty simple semi-random blind picks. Enemies you'll probably want to attack, rarely defend, and hopefully not have to heal. Once you gain enough experience, you click a stat to make it go up by one. Repeat.

That's about it. I just explained what I was doing the entire time, before I messed up and got myself killed by an ogre (late game enemies hit HARD). If doing that repeatedly sounds a little grindy, well, it is. There's an ending, but you need to max out every stat and survive the final boss to reach it, and there's no saving.

Sounds a little bad. But I can't bring myself to agree. I didn't hate it. I enjoyed it quite a bit. So why did I enjoy it? Good question.

Maybe it's just the dopamine hit as I watch number go up, or the meditative repetitiveness of a practiced loop. It reminded me of some of the games I used to play as a kid, that were neither complex nor especially "interesting" (but they were certainly more content-rich). While other people would probably see enough by 5 minutes or so, I think I went for a half-hour. Sorry, everyone, I dunno what to tell you. I'm not sure I can recommend Thou Shalt Be Brave, on its own merits, for anything past a quick look, but maybe someone else will see what I saw in it.

I enjoyed it, but I imagine others wouldn't. Thou Shalt Be Brave is a good game.
